Read Online Reviews with a Wary Eye

When you want to know more about a business or service, do you head to the Internet and search for reviews? Reviews can be a great way to get information about products and companies. However, you should be aware that these reviews aren’t always indicative of the experience that you’re going to have. Online reviews are simply the opinion of the reviewer.
Try to read through the lines when reading reviews online. Let’s say that you’re looking for long term disability insurance. You’re trying to choose between two different disability insurance companies. You find reviews for each online. One has a single review that is positive. The other has three or four reviews but one of them is very negative. Read the content of the negative review carefully. Was the writer angry about something that doesn’t relate to you? Can you tell what caused this person to write a negative review? How does it compare to the other reviews?
The company with the single positive review may or may not be the better choice. You simply can’t tell from the reviews alone. Reviews should be used to guide you in making your decisions. However, they shouldn’t be used as the final decision-maker. You’ll have to determine your own criteria for that.
