Low-Cost Internet Marketing in a Recession

Internet marketing is great during a recession, because it is relatively affordable.  What follows are a few marketing ideas that will cost you little or nothing, except (in some cases) the time it takes for you or your employee to do it.

  • Maintain a company blog.  Company blogs may have tips and advice, company news, product reviews and discussions, or maybe even all of the above.  You could undertake this  project yourself, but if you aren’t much of a writer, it won’t cost much to have an employee maintain it for you or even to hire a contractor for the job.
  • Give employees blogs.  Some companies have given their employees free blogs and encouraged them to blog about work.  This will save you the cost of hiring a contractor, but you will need to monitor what your employees are blogging about!
  • Distribute press releases and marketing articles.  Press releases serve several purposes: They get the word out about your company, potentially get space in local media, and generate links back to your website.  Marketing articles set you up as an expert in your industry, create branding opportunities, and generate links.
  • Join social networks.  Social networks such as LinkedIn, FaceBook, and MySpace are great ways to get the word out about your company, generate leads, and find potential new clients by befriending people in your target market.

Regardless of whether you sell Canada tour packages online or simply want your local store to have a web presence, Internet marketing can be a cost-effective way to go when the economy is slow and your budget is short!
