Reasons to Rent a Computer

Did you know that you can rent a computer instead of buying one? If you’ve never heard of computer rentals before then you may be wondering why you would want to do this.

Common reasons to rent a computer include:

  • To test out a new type of computer. Maybe you want to switch from a PC to a Mac or maybe you just want to try a new brand of PC. A rental lets you try before you buy so you don’t waste your money on products that you don’t like in the end.
  • To temporarily replace broken computers in the office. If you have to send your computer out to be repaired then you might rent another computer to replace it so that you still have a computer to use during the downtime.
  • For travel. Laptop rentals are particularly common for people who need a computer to travel but don’t need that computer for any other time than the vacation stretch.
  • For conventions and classes. Computer rental is most common for events. People rent computers in order to demo their products (such as software) and to let the people at the event play around with it on a computer that doesn’t belong to them.

Those are just some reasons that you might rent a computer. Does computer rental make more sense now? I know it does to me!

Getting Free Business Advice from Friends

business_adviceDo you ever get free professional advice from your friends who are experts in a field other than your own? I think that there are times when this is appropriate. However I don’t think people should expect their friends to provide them with free services.

For example, I have experience working as a blogger. People ask me all of the time to teach them how to make money blogging. Although I don’t mind pointing my friends in the right direction, I do mind being asked to truly teach them how to do the work. It’s tough work and I find it offensive that they think it’s so simple that I can just spend my time teaching it to them at no cost to my own work. My time is valuable and it annoys me when they don’t respect that.

My way around this problem is to offer to barter for services. For example, I have a friend who provides debt consulting services. I offered to teach him how to blog for his business in exchange for assistance with my own business debt reduction. That kind of situation seems fair. Asking your friends to provide a professional service to you at no charge doesn’t seem fair at all.

Two Choices But Only One Outcome

I hate making a decision.  In fact, making decisions would have to be one of the most stressful things in my life, and that is why I usually leave the decision making up to my spouse – and he doesn’t mind it at all.

Even though I try to avoid making decisions, there are just some situations where you have to suck it up and decide for yourself.  I ran into one of those situations this morning and I only have until the end of the day to decide – talk about pressure!

You see, I entered a draw to win either the opportunity to swim with dolphins in Mexico or swim with dolphins in Tortola.  I wasn’t really counting on winning, but I thought it would be an experience of a lifetime to do something like that.

But I won.

Well, I was excited at first, but then I realized the price of winning this prize – I was going to have to choose.  I asked if I could have some time to make a decision and all they gave me is until the end of the day to make a decision.  So, I guess I will be swimming with dolphins, but as to where, I don’t know.

Which one do you think I should pick?

Deciding What is Most Important

Since I moved out from my parents home just two years ago, there have been a number of lessons that I have had to learn.  I guess the first one that I learned quickly was that money really didn’t go very far.  I failed to realize that my parents paid for a lot of my expenses, which resulted in me having to change my lifestyle so that I could live with what money I had.

One of the lessons that I learned once I was paying everything on my own was that there was an opportunity cost for everything.  A wonderful example of the “cost” of something was when I decided that I absolutely needed some western bedding from the western decorating store down the street from my home.  I bought it because I wanted it and I was very happy when I made my bed in my room.  It was like I was in heaven!

But what my brain failed to realize was that I spent everything but twenty dollars of my grocery money for the next week, and I was forced to eat spaghetti for seven days in a row because that was all I could afford.  “Surprisingly”, I am not a big fan of spaghetti anymore…

I did learn from these experiences and I take my time when I am deciding what is most important and for the most part, I make the right choice.

Tallying Up my Commissions

One of the rituals that I seem to have developed since I became a commissioned salesperson is that I tally up my commissions everyday while I am eating supper.  For me, it helps to give me something to focus on while eating in my quiet apartment and makes me forget about living alone.

By tallying up the commissions on a daily basis, I can go into work the following day if there are any discrepancies between the numbers that the office has and what I have for numbers.  It has not only made me some money, but it has also saved some money for the company I work for too (I am honest when their numbers are wrong).  I feel that they appreciate that I double check so I really don’t mind doing it.

It is interesting to see what I did manage to sell over the course of the day and sometimes I make little challenges for myself.  For example, I might set a sales goal to sell ten high pressure sodium bulbs in one day and if I do reach my goal I reward myself.

I have also made a little chart on my wall to keep track of some of the products so that I can compare them to last years results.  It also helps me to know what days that I might need extra fluorescent light bulbs and predict when our clients will need certain products.

Needless to say, I think my daily ritual has value to me, and should it benefit others then that is just a bonus result.
